The whatsapp vs telegram business question comes up in almost every project we start in Yerevan. The honest answer: for receiving leads in Armenia, Telegram is usually the main channel, and WhatsApp is a useful second door for certain clients. Below is how they compare in practice.
How clients in Armenia reach businesses
Telegram is widely used in Armenia for news channels, group chats and talking to businesses. Many people who moved to Yerevan from Russia and other countries rely on it too. WhatsApp is common among some local clients, people with family abroad and foreign visitors.
So the choice is rarely "one or the other". It is about which channel carries the main flow and how the leads get to your team.

Side-by-side comparison
| Criteria | Telegram | |
|---|---|---|
| Bots for bookings and orders | Free official Bot API, flexible buttons | WhatsApp Business Platform, verification and per-conversation fees |
| Website requests to a team chat | Easy, a group chat gets every request | Possible through paid services, more setup |
| Several staff in one chat | Group chats, roles, topics | Business app works best for one or two phones |
| Broadcasts to clients | Channel or bot messages to people who started the bot | Template messages, paid and moderated |
| Foreign visitors | Some use it | Many use it |
| Bot build cost at Kinto | from $500 | Discussed separately |
Why we route leads to Telegram
Every Kinto website sends requests to a Telegram chat. The reasons are practical:
- Speed. The request arrives within seconds. The owner or manager sees it on the phone without opening a dashboard.
- Team work. Several people can sit in one chat. Someone replies "taken", and others know the lead is handled.
- Cost. No monthly fee for the notification itself.
- History. Every request stays in the chat and is easy to search.

When WhatsApp makes sense
Add WhatsApp when:
- A noticeable share of your clients are tourists or foreign residents, for example in hotels, tours or short-term rental.
- Your older clients simply do not use Telegram.
- Your partners abroad prefer it.
The simplest option is a WhatsApp button on the website that opens a chat with your business number. It costs almost nothing and does not need a bot.
Bots: where the difference is biggest
A Telegram bot can take bookings, show a menu, collect a request with photos and send it to your team. Building it is straightforward and running it does not cost per message. At Kinto a Telegram bot costs from $500.
A WhatsApp bot works through the WhatsApp Business Platform. You need a verified business account, template messages approved in advance, and you pay for conversations. It is a good tool for larger companies, but for a salon, a cafe or a small agency the overhead is usually not worth it at the start.
A simple setup that works
For most small businesses in Armenia we suggest:
- Website form with name, phone and a short question. Requests go to a Telegram team chat.
- Telegram bot for bookings or orders, linked from Instagram and the website.
- WhatsApp button on the site for clients who prefer it, leading to the manager's business number.
- One rule for the team: whoever takes a lead marks it in the chat.
| Part | Price at Kinto |
|---|---|
| Landing page with form to Telegram | from $700, about 6 days |
| Website with sections | from $1,800, about 12 days |
| Telegram bot | from $500 |
| CRM integration | from $700 |
Common mistakes
- Leads in five places. Instagram direct, WhatsApp, Telegram, phone and email, with nobody checking all of them. Pick one main chat for the team.
- A personal number on the site. When the employee leaves, the clients leave with them. Use a business number or a shared chat.
- No reply time. A lead that waits until the next day often goes to a competitor. Agree who answers and how fast.
Next step
Tell us where your clients write to you now, and we will suggest a setup. Message @kinto_am on Telegram or leave a request on the Telegram bot page. We reply within 15 minutes, 10:00 to 20:00 Yerevan time.
